Jackie McLean Memorial Virtual Concert Celebration 2021 Featuring the Clifton Anderson Sextet with Special guest Rene’ McLean
October 21 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm$25
The Artists Collective is pleased to present the Clifton Anderson Sextet with special guest Rene’ McLean in a virtual performance on Thursday, October 21st, 2021, at 8:00 p.m. EDT.
Clifton Anderson was born on October 5, 1957, in Harlem, New York City. He grew up surrounded by music. His father was a church organist/choir director, and his mother a singer and pianist. It was no surprise that Clifton exhibited an affinity for music at an early age. When he was just seven years old, he received his first trombone, a gift from his uncle, the legendary Sonny Rollins. From that time on, he was destined to accomplish great things in music.
He is an alumnus of the Fiorello LaGuardia High School of Music and Art and The Manhattan School of Music, where he studied under renowned Metropolitan Opera trombonist John Clark. It was around this time that Slide Hampton formed the original World of Trombones, the group that would become the standard by which all jazz trombone choirs were measured. Clifton has recorded and toured with his own groups since 2009. He has released four solo recordings under his name, And So We Carry On, Decade, Landmarks, and newly released Been Down This Road Before.
Throughout his musical career, Clifton Anderson has performed or recorded with a “who’s who” of diverse musical giants such as: McCoy Tyner, Dizzy Gillespie, Slide Hampton, Lester Bowie,
Stevie Wonder, Merv Griffin, Keith Richards, Paul Simon, The Mighty Sparrow, Dee Dee Bridgewater,
Muhal Richard Abrams, Wallace Roney, Abdullah Ibrahim and T.S. Monk, to name a few.
Widely regarded for his work with his uncle, Clifton toured with him worldwide and has appeared on ten of his recordings and also produced three CDs and one DVD for Sonny Rollins’ DOXY record label. Clifton’s playing, writing, and musical concepts are the embodiment of his musical travels and life experiences. He is well known for his rich personal sound on the trombone and his astute abilities as a composer and musical interpreter.
Joining Clifton Anderson for this virtual performance will be Antoine Roney, reeds, Edsel Gomez, piano, Beldon Bullock, bass, Ronnie Burrage, drums, Victor See Yuen, percussion; with special guest Rene’ McLean, flutes and reeds.
